North Loop, Minneapolis

What was once a city slum, has transformed into a beautiful, thriving, and fun section of Minneapolis. This neighborhood, called the North Loop, is located in the northern section of city.  The boundaries of this neighborhood are “West: Interstate 94, with the boundary continuing along 12th Street North to Third Avenue North, then to Washington Avenue, and Hennepin Avenue to the River” (Live MSP). This area now has many different options for housing, dining, entertainment, work, and bars. In addition, it has absolutely stunning architecture, landscaped walking paths, and green spaces. North Loop is has something for everyone, but if you don’t believe me, take Karen Rosar’s, member of the Neighborhood council, advice! Her comments about the neighborhood are included through the post!

History:
The North Loop has not always been so wonderful. In fact, the North Loop, as stated by the City of Minneapolis,  used to be a warehouse district. During the 1900’s its location in Minneapolis and border on the Mississippi River, gave the perfect location for Wholesale market and shipping. Unfortunately, as railroad and shipping declined, the area was transformed into just junkyards and bars. It was a poor neighborhood, in desperate need of an overhaul. Fortunately, this transformation came in the form of new residential and business developers, as well as protection from federal level and many historical preservation societies. Karen Rosar commented that this “change ensued fast but left in certain aspects to retain its character and history”. This wave of development rejuvenated the are, making it “Minneapolis’s fastest growing neighborhood, with 1,500 residents in 2000 tripling to 4,300 in 2010” (North Loop.org)!

Housing:
With its residential overhaul, the North Loop has become home to many expensive and luxury buildings. Luckily this style is justified, as it has the perfect location and good neighborhood amenities.  The location has created a rather young demographic, with the average population being “25-34 (37%), 35-44 (17%), 45-54 (13%) and 55-64 (9%)” (North Loop.org). However as Karen Rosar also mention, the “community is pushing hard for educational families, as they are planning to open a new school this year”.  The neighborhood council would like to diversify the area and make it more welcoming to all families and people.

Entertainment:
The North Loop has many entertainment options.  Home to Acme Comedy Club, it is the perfect destination for those with a case of the giggles. Acme, has many top comedians and hilarious open mic nights.  They also have great deals for college kids! Additionally, the North loop is home to the Guthrie, a huge theater that plays many popular shows and artists. Moreover, this neighborhood, has sports! It is home the Minnesota Twins, a professional baseball. Finally the North Loop also has the Cedar Lake Regional Trail, which is the perfect outdoor option for a good stroll outside.

Restaurants/ Bars:
The North Loop has many top notch restaurants, most of which stretch from 3rd street to 5th Avenue. Some specific restaurants that are so good they must be mentioned would be, Be’witched Deli, Black Sheep Coal Fired Pizza, Smack Shack, (these restaurants are Karen’s favorite and she highly recommends them), Haute Dish, and Bar La Grassa. Check out this link for a full list of all of your dinning and drinking options.

Green Spaces/ Walking Space/ Parks:
Since the North Loop borders right on the Mississippi River, there are some green space options. There is a walking path right next to the Mississippi on West Mississippi  River Boulevard. It is so beautiful, safe, and peaceful! In addition, a brand to playground was built, giving  families and children a place to play in the city.

Transportation:
Since the North Loop is in the heart of downtown Minneapolis, driving becomes a bit more complicated.  The traffic is heavy and there are limited places to park.  However, this problem is easily solved, as having a car isn’t necessary. Walking is very easy, bike paths are abundant, bus systems are efficient, and there is a brand new light rail close by. All of these options make accessing the  surrounding Twin Cities very easy and logical. Karen also mentioned that the light rail is a big step for the neighborhood. She said that is important because “in order to have opportunity, you need to have access to things”!

The North Loop is a great afternoon destination, place to live, and place to go out! Take our word for it and go check it out!!

Roseville, MN

Nestled between the Mississippi and the Minnesota Rivers, Roseville was first home to the Dakota and Ojibway.  Because of its prime location between two rivers, the Dakota believed “it was immediately over the center of the earth and beneath the center of heaven.” Today, it still remains a central location as it is one of two Twin Cities suburbs that is adjacent to both Saint Paul and Minneapolis. With a ten-minute commute to either downtown area, it offers residents a mix of suburban and urban lifestyles.

Roseville002     Golf Carts at Midland Hills Country Club

Additionally, Roseville offers an abundance of recreational activities including shopping, skating and a variety of outdoor activities. For example, playing a round of Golf at Cedarholm Golf Course or Midland Hills Country Club is a popular activity for a sunny afternoon.

Rosedale Center Mall in Roseville, MN

Or, with the mega mall Rosedale Center as well as six other shopping centers it’s easy to shop ’til you drop! Fun Fact: the first Target was built in Roseville in 1962. How awesome is that?! But if shopping isn’t your thing, lucky for you the AMC Rosedale 14 is adjacent to the Rosedale Center. There, it’s easy to sit back and relax with an icy cold drink and hot buttery popcorn while you check out the latest Hollywood flicks.

On the other hand, bibliophiles – aka book lovers – will delight in the Ramsey County Library- Roseville. Impressively, it is the largest library in Ramsey County and busiest library in Minnesota. With more than 340,000 volumes in its collection, nearly three times that of any other branch in the county, it is no wonder why!

Roseville Skating Center and John Rose Oval

Another popular attraction is The Roseville Skating Center, which is sure to accommodate all your skating needs both on and off the ice. It features an indoor arena, banquet center as well as an outdoor skate park for skateboarding and inline skating. The Roseville Ice Arena is a year-round ice arena used for hockey, figure skating, skating lessons and general public skating. Included in the Roseville Skating Center is the John Rose Minnesota Oval. The Oval, an outdoor ice rink features a 400 meter speed skating track that surrounds an infield ice area used for hockey or bandy.

Roseville offers nature lovers the beautiful Harriet Alexander Nature Center, a beautiful place for your next reception or special event as well as 34 other spectacular parks.

Children playing soccer in Roseville, MN

With a staggering 19 K-12 public schools and 7 private schools there certainly no shortage of options for parents when it comes to finding a nearby school. While Roseville is divided between two school districts, Mounds View School District 621 and Roseville Area School District 623, they are both consistently ranked among the best in the state.

Interior of La Casita Mexican Restaurant in Roseville, MN.

In terms of restaurants, Roseville certainly isn’t lacking. Two of our favorites are La Casita and Grumpy’s Bar and Grill. La Casita serves authentic Mexican food made with only the freshest ingredients. Be sure to check out the Twin Cities’ best frozen margarita or the happy hour appetizer bar with free chili con Queso, bean dip and salsa (with a minimum $4.95 purchase).

Sign outside of Grumpys in Roseville Grumpy's Bar and Grill Patio

Grumpy’s Bar & Grill is another spot not to pass up. It features a dining room, patio and separate bar. Plus they offer everything from bingo to karaoke so it is sure to please your entire crew.

Roseville Home

Moving on, more than half the homes in Roseville are single family homes at moderate prices, making this an ideal spot for younger families. Additionally, Roseville boasts that their taxes are consistently among the lowest in the Twin Cities area.

Overall, Roseville provides a unique blend of suburban and urban lifestyles to its residents. It encompasses both vibrant residential and retail areas, making it an ideal place to raise a family or start a business. Additionally, the safe neighborhoods, spectacular parks, friendly business environment and prime location make this Ramsey County suburb hard not to love.

Golden Valley, MN

Golden Valley, located in the western suburbs of Minneapolis, has a population of more than 20,000. The city is known for being home to multiple Fortune 500 Companies, including General Mills and Honeywell. It also happens to be home to Gigi’s Cupcakes, which serves some of the BEST cupcakes we’ve ever tried, as well as having some of the most active community centers we’ve ever visited. Read on for much more about this lovely city!

   DSCN2553       IMG_1600

IMG_1641

Theodore Wirth Park is a 795-acre recreation area that offers year round activities for the entire family. Golf courses in the summer turn into slopes for cross-country skiing when the temperatures drop. At the same time, you’ll find several scenic hiking trails, which are popular during the winter. The park also serves as the starting point for the City of Lakes Loppet Ski Festival, a fun event held annually at the end of January. Theodore Wirth definitely has a lot to offer everyone throughout the year!

DSCN2583

After skiing, if you feel like warming up next to a cozy fire or having a nice strong drink (we mean coffee, of course), you can do so at the Golden Valley Golf and Country Club, which just celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2014. With luxe amenities and a very welcoming staff, the club serves as a great place for members to take their family after a round of golf in the summer or to warm up after hiking during the winter. Located on a hill overlooking the city, the GVGCC stands out for it’s elegance and stately grace – that explains why it’s an award-winning venue for social events and weddings!

DSCN2565  DSCN2567

Golden Valley doesn’t only take care of its human residents – they also make plenty of time to look after our furry, four-legged friends! The Animal Humane Society, located right next to Theodore Wirth Park, is a place with double “do-good” benefits. Not only is it a place where you can adopt your future pet (and save an animal that’s oftentimes injured or orphaned), but the Society also provides many great services to the surrounding community. For example, they have a well-known Outreach program that offers summer camps for young children and teens who love animals, as well as various community service projects. If you’re interested, feel free to read about more ways to help animals here.

IMG_1668

Now back to Golden Valley’s human population. The city has many active community centers, such as the Davis Community Center and Brookview Community Center, which houses GV’s Park & Recreation department (no word on whether the staff gets into as many shenanigans as the Pawnee team from the beloved TV show). The center also offers activities for residents of all ages, including exercise classes, and it’s associated with the Brookview Golf Course located right outside of its doors.

DSCN2599     DSCN2601

If your kids still have energy after spending time at the community center, feel free to head to the 3rd Lair Skatepark and Skateshop. Behind its well-decorated but unassuming front door, the Skatepark hides hours of safe family fun. You might ask yourself, “What? Skateboarding in the middle of winter?” If so, you’ll be glad to know it’s an indoor skatepark (which also welcomes BMX riders). So even though it might be cold outside, your kids can still skate/ride to their heart’s content without (your) fear of (them) getting frostbite.

IMG_1681      DSCN2602

The fun at 3rd Lair doesn’t stop with the skateboard park; it also serves as a skateboard shop, a favorite hangout among locals. Both the park and shop are owned by Mark Rodriguez, a St. Paul native, who opened 3rd Lair twelve years ago. According to Mark, 3rd Lair is an integral part of the Golden Valley community, participating in youth programs and remaining active with local charities. Mark also happens to be the proud owner of the most photogenic cat we’ve ever seen, Big Al (check out his adorable cameos in the photos above!).

IMG_1727

You’ve now seen much of what Golden Valley has to provide as far as family fun activities go. But of course we couldn’t leave out one of our most favorite things: food, food, food! A great spot to find casual eateries as well as upscale dining options is the Golden Valley Commons Shopping Center. If a tasty lunch is what you’re craving, you have a great variety of choices. From Noodles & Company to Subway, there’s something to suit every palate. Or if you’re hankering for some ethnic flavor, then Panchero’s Mexican Grill is the place for you. Planning a romantic date night (Valentine’s Day is on its way, after all)? Then check out Doolittle’s Woodfire Grill, known for its warm, relaxing atmosphere – perfect for cuddling up to your loved ones!

Speaking of great Valentine’s treats, you should definitely visit Gigi’s Cupcakes, now a world-famous business! Based out of Nashville, Tennessee, Gigi’s serves as a great place to give in to your sweet tooth. During our visit, we were lucky enough to talk to one of the sweetest (yes, pun intended) people you’ll ever meet – resident cupcake artist, Amanda (aka Amanda “The Decorator”). She said they pride themselves on how their goods are baked fresh daily and they never sell day-old goods; instead owners Jamie and Aaron Clayborn take them to the local hospital for patients, nurses, and doctors to enjoy! We had a great time at Gigi’s and the cupcakes were sensational – we highly recommend them. We particularly enjoyed the chocolate chip cookie dough cupcake (phew, that was a tongue-twister, see the picture above). Take a trip to Gigi’s and Tweet us to let us know which treat is your favorite!

DSCN2594

As a real estate brokerage, we of course couldn’t help noticing all the great looking houses and other living facilities during our time in Golden Valley. The community truly embraces all ages and backgrounds! The single-family homes are perfect for growing families, while the townhomes and apartments are better suited for young professionals. Take a look at a sampling of the living options that Golden Valley has to offer:

We really loved this log cabin – how about you? Feel free to tell us in the comments.

DSCN2590

For people who like to go jogging or take scenic walks through parks, now is your time to rejoice! GV has many parks, including Wesley Park and Brookview Park. While the parks vary in size, all are great for family strolls, or even for your morning run. Feel free to visit the Golden Valley Community website for a map of all the city’s parks.

DSCN2641

Did you know that Golden Valley holds more jobs than people per capita? Well, no surprise. Golden Valley is home to the World Headquarters of General Mills, and companies such as Allianz Insurance, Tennant Company, Honeywell, Kare 11 TV Station, and Room & Board. These companies provide many employment opportunities in the area.

DSCN2645     DSCN2573

Well dear reader, this is where we end our post. We highly encourage you to visit Golden Valley and keep it in mind if you’re searching for a new home. If you’re familiar with the area, tell us what is your favorite local spot? Have you visited any of the places we mentioned?

Lake Nokomis

Nokomis, Minneapolis

The Nokomis neighborhood in South Minneapolis has a population of more than 40,000 people, who no doubt find the area as interesting as we do. It’s surrounded by the Minneapolis-St.Paul International Airport, Veterans Memorial Park, and Interstate 35W. Many people know of the Nokomis area for its main attraction, which we’re sure you’ve heard about or visited at least once – Minnehaha Falls. Sound familiar? Well, there’s much more to this family-friendly neighborhood that you need to read about.

The first place you should visit is the neighborhood’s namesake, Lake Nokomis. During the winter, the lake is a haven for winter sports aficionados and it attracts hockey enthusiasts and ice fishers alike. Each year, for a weekend in mid-January, the lake is overtaken by the U.S. Pond Hockey Championships. Established in 2007, the annual tournament draws both local and international players and celebrates the very sport for which Minnesota is known. If you love hockey and don’t mind hanging out in sub-zero temps, then you definitely won’t want to miss out on this event!

DSC_0034

If you’re like us and prefer to admire the lake’s beauty from a distance, be sure to bundle up and go for a walk around the frozen terrain. Take a moment to admire one of the many picturesque bridges. You might even catch a glimpse of some brave ice fishers like the guys seen above!

Right next to the lake, you’ll find the Nokomis Community Center. Because of its stunning view of the lake, it’s a favorite location for special events, including wedding receptions! The center offers a full range of recreational programs for every age group, including athletics, cultural and fine arts, music and dance, and community celebrations. Click on the link above if you’d like to see the center’s hours, times, and upcoming events!

Nearby, you’ll find the Aqualand Aquarium Center. Family owned since 1966, its prime location makes it a favorite neighborhood destination for families with young children. If you’re feeling nautical (and want to feel like you’re in a tropical getaway rather than a frozen tundra), make sure to visit the Aquarium. Aqualand is especially known for its selection of tropical fish!

DSC_0209

Feeling artsy? Well then you should definitely check out the Museum of Russian Art. At first glance, it may look more like a church than a museum (the building was originally a chapel), but don’t be deceived by its appearance. In 2013, Star Tribune named it as one out of the city’s Best Museums To Take Out-of-Towners, but even if you’re a local who just wants to entertain yourself with a little Russian culture, there’s no better place to go.

IMG_0476

Speaking of entertainment, Nokomis has a lot more to offer! For example, the retro-inspired Parkway Theater provides a large selection of movies from diverse backgrounds for you to choose from. Described as the “Neighborhood Cinema,” the Parkway celebrates the community’s independent filmmakers from all ages and backgrounds. You can read more about them here.

DSC_0064 copy

If transportation is a big concern for you, don’t worry because Metro Transit has got you covered in this neighborhood. The centrally-located transit station, which is serviced by multiple bus lines and the Metro Blue Line, is located right next to Oaks Station Place, Oak’s Properties’ newest apartment community. Talk about convenience!

If hunger strikes then you’re surely in luck, because Nokomis is home to the world-famous restaurant, Matt’s Bar, known for its “Jucy Lucy” hamburger (and no, that’s not a typo – with all that cheese, there’s no room for an “i” in Matt’s burger!). Opening in 1954 as a neighborhood joint, Matt’s Bar has since grown to be one of biggest must-eat places for out-of-towners and serves as a regular hangout for locals. The “Jucy Lucy” itself has an exciting story; make sure to read more about it on Matt’s website.

DSC_0186  DSC_0188

If you decide to take a walk to burn off some of those calories from Matt’s (which are so worth it, in our opinion) then be ready to stroll past some of the cutest houses around. Consisting of mainly traditional and cottage-style homes, you might feel like you’ve been transported to a quaint New England town, rather than being located just minutes from the hustle and bustle of a big city. Adding to the cozy, small-town feel is the fact that you’re likely to run into professional dog walkers, escorting 6 or 7 dogs like it’s no big deal. See this adorable picture for woof-proof!

DSC_0259    DSC_0254

If shopping is your preferred form of cardio, then you’re going to love the small shops on Chicago Avenue. While in the neighborhood, we had the chance to talk to some local business owners like Jake Sanders, proprietor of the family business, Shop in the City. He told us about the shop’s humble beginning in 2002, and how it has grown into a community favorite. Jake and the rest of the team currently remain active in the Nokomis community by participating in fundraisers and giving charity donations. Many of the surrounding businesses have similar stories, either being family-owned or having been around for many decades.

Because of its wide array of activities and abundance of single-family homes, Nokomis is a great place to live. For families looking to settle down in a safe community, then this is the right place. Served by elementary schools such as Wenonah, Keewaydin, and Hale, Nokomis provides a great, safe environment for kids to grow up and thrive.

IMG_0393

Last, but not least we have Minnehaha Falls, a magnificent 53-foot waterfall, located in Minnehaha Regional Park. The name originates from the Dakota language with “Mini’ meaning water and “haha” meaning waterfall; because of the second half of its name, it is sometimes referred to as the “Laughing Waters.” This park offers a great place to admire one of nature’s most powerful and awe-inspiring forces. During the summer, you’ll often find couples taking wedding pictures under the park’s gazebo. During the winter, it’s just as majestic when the water freezes and turns the falls into a frozen fantasy.

So, dear reader, this is where we end our post. Feel free to contact us with any questions about the neighborhood, or let us know if we missed one of your favorite local hangouts! Make sure to check out the rest of our neighborhood features to find the right match for you.

Nene Matey-Keke Wins MAAR 2014 Realtor of the Year Award

Nene Matey-Keke, MAAR, Realtor of the Year

Most companies share a common goal of ending the year better than where they started it. RNR Realty International can certainly say they have accomplished that in 2014. The company’s principal broker and owner, Nene Matey-Keke, was recently named the Minneapolis Area Association of REALTORS® (MAAR) 2014 REALTOR® of the Year. Matey-Keke beat out more than 7,500 Twin Cities competitors to receive this prestigious award for his dedication to his clients, involvement in local and national associations, and volunteerism throughout the community.

“I was humbled and appreciative that all of my efforts to gain a better understanding of and to improve both this industry and my business have culminated in this achievement,” said Matey-Keke. “I’ve spent the better half of my lifetime trying to set forth to be the best at what I do, so to be recognized by my peers for something that I’m so passionate about is the greatest honor that I could have received.”

For those who know Matey-Keke, it’s easy to see why MAAR decided to present him with this award. Driven, determined, and dedicated are just a few words that family, friends, colleagues, and affiliates use to describe the hardworking realtor. As proof, Matey-Keke holds a total of 14 different residential and commercial real estate certifications and designations, and more than 25 additional certifications, which cover financial investment, community development, and construction.

Having been in the real estate industry for almost fifteen years, Matey-Keke has been diligent in continually building not only his multiple businesses, but also his personal knowledge as well as his ever-growing professional network, which he does partly by maintaining membership in numerous associations and committees.

At MAAR, Matey-Keke recently completed his appointment to serve on the Board of Directors and has previously been on the Finance Committee, Nominating Committee and the Young Professionals Network. He will continue his involvement with the Global Business Council and Public Affairs Committee.

At the state level, working with the Minnesota Association of REALTORS® (MNAR), Matey-Keke is on the Board of Directors, Executive Committee, Commercial Forms Sub Committee, Governmental Affairs Committee, Minnesota RPAC Board of Trustees, Professional Standards Committee, and is an active participant of the Strategic Planning session. He also was a founding member of the Diversity Committee and served as the 2014 Chairman. During his tenure, he spearheaded a joint partnership between MNAR and Junior Achievement of the Upper Midwest as one way to address the current homeownership disparity. Junior Achievement now incorporates the value of homeownership for all in its curriculum. Matey-Keke’s commitment to improving diversity within the real estate industry has led to his appointment as treasurer of the recently created local chapter of the Asian Real Estate Association of America – Twin Cities (AREAA).

At the national level (National Association of REALTORS®), Matey-Keke is the Federal Political Coordinator assigned to the 5th District under Congressman Keith Ellison. He is also a member of the Global Business and Alliances Committee, Research Committee, and previously served on the Federal Financing and Housing Policy Committee, Diversity Committee, and Housing Opportunity Committee.

In addition to his extensive REALTOR® association involvement, Matey-Keke also dedicates time to developing the commercial and investment aspects of his business, by actively participating in the Minnesota Commercial Association of Realtors (MNCAR) and the Minnesota Real Estate Investment Association (MnREIA), respectively.

One of Matey-Keke’s many areas of focus is the international community. His attention to this particular market contributed greatly to his REALTOR® of the Year victory, as well as to his overall personal success. It was because of his background and interest in travelling and learning more about other cultures that he created RNR Realty to be an international business. He would like to use his recent accomplishment to push the business even farther globally, in order to help increase clients’ opportunities for relocation, purchasing resort or second properties, investment (Commercial and Residential) as well as to help make homeownership accessible to all worldwide.

In fact, it was his own personal struggle to overcome past adversity and a lack of access to information that motivates him to work with underprivileged communities today. Despite his extensive association involvement – not to mention running multiple businesses – Matey-Keke still finds time to teach first time homebuyer classes for various local organizations, including Model Cities, the African Development Center, and Community Action Partnership of Suburban Hennepin (CAPSH). He has also spoken for the Minneapolis Urban League’s “Realizing the American Dream” class, which hits close to home.

“Being the child of two parents who have had tremendous fights to claim and acknowledge their identities, in addition to overcoming lack of access and exposure to mainstream resources, has always driven me to be the best and to take advantage of all the resources that are available to me now,” said Matey-Keke. “Rising from [my upbringing] and charting my own path with little to no guidance within the real estate industry has been difficult, to say the least. That is, until I became involved with the association. Getting more involved with the association has led me to be a better businessman and has increased my opportunities overall. Starting where I did, it’s that much more rewarding to be the first African-American to receive this honor and be recognized for having achieved a certain level of success in this industry to which I have given myself.”

Recently, Matey-Keke has also begun teaching community education classes in neighborhoods around the Twin Cities, on topics ranging from purchasing investment properties to finding the best resort and second property opportunities, locally, nationally and globally.

REALTOR® of the Year award winners are allowed to select a charitable organization to receive a $1,000 donation in their name. Matey-Keke chose MCASA Homes, a Model Cities program that provides affordable homeownership opportunities to low and moderate income families. He selected this program because he has previously worked with Model Cities, and he strongly believes in MCASA’s mission to put homeownership within everyone’s reach.

Emily Green, the 2014 MAAR President and past REALTOR® of the Year award recipient, helped name Matey-Keke as this year’s winner and presented him with the trophy.

“Nene is a REALTOR® who contributes to the community and advocates at a local, state and national level for homeownership opportunities for all,” Green explained. “His service to our industry has been invaluable and we are proud to honor him with the distinguished designation of REALTOR® of the year.”

5 Winter Activities to do in Minnesota

Skiing, ice-skating, and snowboarding are all famous activities to do in the winter. But, what else is there to do? Minnesota can be really cold during the winter, (understatement of the year?) and it’s normal to think that there’s not much to do other than sit around and read books. So, for those eager to go out and explore snowy Minnesota here’s a compiled list of 5 Winter Activities to do In Minnesota.

1. Visit the Holidazzle Village

Located in Downtown Minneapolis the Holidazzle starts off on November 28th with a parade, fireworks, lights, and a whole lot of singing. Although the parade only happens, to open up the festivities, the celebration continues. Take a stroll down Nicolette Avenue with family and friends, and you will come across the Holidazzle Village. It’s free of charge, and takes place from November 28th to December 21st. We bet we’ll be “dazzled”!

2. Go to Bentleyville,”Tour of Lights”

A successful and annual event in Duluth, MN. Be ready to be really cold!! Due to the Lake Effect Duluth is always a bit chillier than the Twin Cities.

If you decide to go to Bentleyville (which we totally recommend you do), put on extra layers and be ready to have fun! It takes about an hour to go through all the tour. But, people usually take up more time to stop for hot cocoa and cookies served throughout the tour. There is also the option of getting marshmallows, which you can enjoy over a fire with some hot cider. However, don’t take our word for it! Go, and let us know what you think!

3. Snowmobiling

After doing some research on where to do this, we came up that Ely, MN was one of the best places to go snowmobiling in. The trails seem to be famous, and one of them cross over three state forests! There are several options as to how long you can decide to go. For example, the 170 mile Taconite Trail, or the 80 mile Tomahawk Trail, both of them providing amazing scenic routes. There are other several options to choose from, of course, but those two seem to be the most famous ones.

4. Skijoring and Dog Sledding

What is Skijoring you ask? Well, if you’ve ski or dog sled before, you probably already have a good idea. Basically, Skijoring is skiing while you have a dog pull on you. Almost like a mix of dog sledding and skiing, if you will. There are six different parks at which you can do this at. All of them are under the link provided by the Three Rivers Park District. All six of them have different trails, and distances you can choose from.

5. Participate in the Saint Paul Winter Carnaval

This Carnival takes on a little later in the year. Starting off on January 22nd and resuming on February 1st, the Carnival is filled with family-fun, day-to-day activities. Mostly all taking place in Rice Park, you can expect a day with up to 23 different events all going on throughout the day. So, you can pick and choose whichever you want to go to!

The story behind the St. Paul Winter Carnival stars with a New York journalist describing St.Paul as “another Siberia, unfit for human habitation” during winter. Offended by the journalist’s remark, the Saint Paul Chamber of Commerce decided to prove otherwise, thus the Saint Paul Winter Carnival.

So, dear reader that’s where we end our post. Have you done or are thinking about doing any of these activities? Let us know, and until next time!

Luxury House

Bloomington, MN

Of course you already know that Bloomington, MN is home to the largest indoor shopping center in the country – ahem, Mall of America – but did you know that the city is also a true winter wonderland? With plenty of cold weather activities to keep you entertained through the loooong Minnesota winters, you might even begin wishing that spring would hold off just a little bit longer…then again, maybe not.

Winter Fete is an annual weeklong celebration held at the end of January, which features a bevy of everyone’s favorite frosty activities, including ice skating, sledding, and an International Ski Jumping Competition. Prefer to just wrap yourself in a warm blanket and relax? Then we recommend taking a horse-drawn sleigh ride at the Pond-Dakota Winter History Festival.

Hyland Park Ski & Snowboard

Hyland Park Ski and Snowboard Area is one of Minnesota’s premier winter sports destinations. The park includes both designated snowboarding slopes and Nordic ski jumps, the latter of which are maintained by the Minneapolis Ski Club. The Club has produced several U.S. Olympic ski jumpers and it even hosted the 2013 Junior National competition. The Hyland Lake Park Reserve grounds are also occupied by the Richardson Nature Center, and the Hyland Greens Golf and Learning Center is located just down the street.

Normandale Community College’s Japanese Garden is a beautiful oasis located in the heart of Bloomington, open to the public year-round. Although the garden reaches its peak of loveliness and full blooming glory in the spring and summer, it is still absolutely stunning during the winter. A Twin Cities favorite location for weddings and photo sessions, it’s a can’t-miss snow-covered haven!

Who knew gardens were the place to be during the winter? The Bloomington Ice Garden (known affectionately by locals as BIG) holds three skating/hockey rinks, one of which is Olympic-sized. This fact made it a clear choice to act as one of the hosts for the 2016 U.S. Figure Skating Championships. If you’re a fan of ice skating, this will be a must-see, once in a lifetime opportunity!

Mall of America

Speaking of “big,” Bloomington is probably most well-known for its largest travel destination – the Mall of America. If you’re not a fan of outdoor activities, then this is the place for you. You could spend a day (probably a week, in actuality) exploring all that the world-famous shopping center has to offer. With nearly 5 million square feet to cover, remember to bring your comfortable shoes to check out the hundreds of stores, vendors, and restaurants. If you visit anytime from Black Friday through New Year’s, make sure you take the time to listen to some carols and other festive jingles, during the Holiday Music Festival. It’s the perfect place to get in the holiday spirit and tick off all the items on your holiday shopping list!

Mall of America Sea Life Aquarium Mall of America Nickelodeon Universe

Before the MOA opened in 1992, the land was the site of Metropolitan Stadium, home to all of Minnesota’s major sports teams until the Metrodome and Target Field were built in the 1980s. Twenty-two years later, the Mall of America is now home to a different form of recreation: shopping ’til you drop. If whipping out your credit card in one of the 500+ stores sounds less than ideal, the mall is also home to the SEA LIFE Minnesota Aquarium, Nickelodeon Universe – at seven acres and with more than thirty rides it’s the country’s largest indoor amusement park – and the nearby Water Park of America, the ninth largest indoor water park in the country.

Civic Center

Still suffering from Black Friday shopping fatigue? (Happy Cyber Monday, by the way!) Skip the Mall and show out-of-town visitors the more cultured side of town by bringing them to the Bloomington Historical Museum, the Bloomington Theater and Art Center, Northwest Airlines History Centre, or The Works museum – a favorite for the kiddos.

Dog Park

Winter is not the only time that Bloomington really shines; there are tons of things to do for warm-weather lovers, throughout the spring and summer. The city offers more than eight thousand acres of parks and open space, including the Pond-Dakota Mission Park and Gideon Pond House. Located on the southeastern edge of the city, the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge caters to nature lovers, offering fishing, hunting, birdwatching and more recreational activities. This upcoming July, the city will host the 10th Annual Bloomington CVB Foundation Golf Tournament, which draws more than 150 yearly participants. Additionally, the Dwan Golf Club is one of the most popular courses in Minnesota and it’s home to the new FootGolf course as well. Also a summertime favorite among locals and visitors alike is the Bloomington Family Aquatic Center, open mid-June through Labor Day. Lastly, across town is Bush Lake Beach, one of the state’s most popular beaches, with more than 100,000 annual visitors.

Light Rail Blue Line

One of the largest suburbs in the Twin Cities metro area, Bloomington is fully accessible from both Minneapolis and St. Paul via large highways and public transportation. Light rail’s Blue Line brings passengers directly to the Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport and Mall of America stations, so you never even need to set foot outside during the most frigid months of the year.

Because of its proximity to both of the Twin Cities, many companies chose Bloomington to house their headquarters, including Ceridian, Donaldson Company, HealthPartners, Holiday Stationstores, Thermo King, and Toro. The Mall of America itself employees more than 11,000 locals, and 13,000 during the peak of holiday season. Residents of Bloomington also love giving back to their community, with one of the largest volunteer fire departments in the country. The city also holds multiple annual charity events, including the Thanksgiving Walk to End Hunger at the Mall of America and February’s upcoming Charity Wedding Gown Sale & Bridal Expo.

Single Family Home Townhomes

Boasting award-winning schools and lots of local amenities, Bloomington attracts families with small children and adolescents, while also providing enough recreational opportunities for young, active couples. With a variety of single-family homes, small apartment complexes, and gated communities, the city has a median home value of around $200,000 which is higher than Minnesota’s average. Bloomington truly has something to offer everyone!

Shakopee, MN

Located just 20 minutes southwest of the Metro area, Shakopee has a small town feel with the convenience of a big city. Founded in 1851 by Thomas A. Holmes, this city was named after a Dakota Chief, Chief Shakopee II, whose band was living in the area along the Minnesota River. Today it is home to over 39,000 and offers a variety of single-family homes as well as a variety of recreational and entertainment opportunities. While the city may be small, Shakopee is a great place to live, work and play.

Downtown Shakopee

While downtown Shakopee may be small, this historic downtown features a number of quaint boutiques and restaurants, an old fashioned bakery, Turtle’s 1890 Social Center and a bi-weekly classic car show in the summer.

ValleyFair Shakopee

In addition, Shakopee is known as a regional entertainment destination and is home to attractions such as Valleyfair Amusement Park and Canterbury Park Racetrack. It also features the Minnesota Renaissance Festival and The Trail of Terror.

Disc Golf in Shakopee

However if you are in search of something more leisurely, you should check out the expansive green spaces at the 18 hole frolf, or Frisbee golf course. Unlike many of the frolf courses in the area this one stands out because it allows patrons to play at no cost.

Shakopee050

It would be hard to mention Shakopee without mentioning the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community. This group is behind Mystic Lake Casino Hotel, the Midwest’s largest casino as well as Little Six Casino. Combined, the two employ over 4,200 people making it the largest employer in Scott County. Besides gaming, the tribe is also very active in the community and giving back. For example, the Dakota tribe have a community center that is owned by the tribe but is also open to the residents living in the community. Here patrons can drop off the kiddos at the daycare, break a sweat in the gym or score a strike at the bowling alley.

Dangerfield in Shakopee

Hungry? Well, you will be sure to find a variety of sports bars, ethnic restaurants and tiny cafes here. Our personal favorites include El Toro, which boasts an outstanding salsa selection and Taco Loco, a hidden gem. On the other hand if you are seeking a more unique experience you may want to give Dangerfield’s a try. This upscale restaurant, open 364 days a year overlooks the Mississippi River and has a screened in porch for dining. Additionally, they boast a comedy club and a stellar Sunday brunch.

Shakopee Playground

Next, the schools in Shakopee are known to be both dynamic and diverse. The schools are also concerned and involved about the Shakopee community. For example, the Shakopee High School won the Regional Jefferson Award for outstanding community service and even traveled to Washington DC to receive this award. How awesome is that?!

House in Shakopee

For those looking to become a part of the community, the housing market in Shakopee offers a variety of options. From town homes and newer two-story homes to single family homes, this town suits a wide variety of styles and budgets.

Shakopee020
Overall, Shakopee is a city that prides itself on being an affordable city with a wide assortment of fun entertainment options located just outside the Twin Cities. If you are looking for the best of both worlds, Shakopee is the place for you.
